INFICON Assisting Transition From Natural Gas to Hydrogen

Hydrogen is playing a significant role in the energy transition towards a climate neutral society and many countries are investigating the possibility to reduce the use of natural gas in favor of hydrogen. The deployment of blended gas networks –with a mix of natural gas and hydrogen – is a step in that direction. However, in order to use these gases in the most efficient way, a major focus must be put on safety and public safeguard.

In the UK, major gas networks, in cooperation with HSE laboratories, conducted extensive tests on mixed pipes in order to monitor safety and compliance of hydrogen distribution. Blended gas pipes have been inspected and equipment evaluated to find gas detection tools adaptable to the new hydrogen society. When it comes to the question of the most suitable leak detection equipment, INFICON plays a major role.

Parameters such as selectivity, response and recovery times as well as measurement capabilities were considered in the evaluation of the most suitable gas detection equipment.

Extensive trials confirmed the validity of the Extrima ® Ex-certified Hydrogen Leak Detector from INFICON. The instrument showed the best selectivity and best recovery. The leak locating performance was found to be outstanding.

By supplying highly reliable H2 gas detection tools, INFICON is playing a major role assisting the transition from natural gas to hydrogen.
