Many utility companies undertake regular surveys of their gas networks to check for leaks. Leaks that go undetected can cause explosions, damage the environment and waste natural resources. It is important for the utility company to select a technology that works well in all circumstances. Otherwise, the equipment may fail to detect gas escaping from the pipelines, giving a false sense of security and making the network survey a costly waste of time.
There is no one technology that will work best in all situations. Fitness for purpose will vary with the requirements. But some technologies are more appropriate than others. Different sampling methods have different capabilities and limitations.
The e-book "Finding Gas Leaks in Urban Gas Distribution Networks" from INFICON sheds light on technologies and methods available today. The publication also covers technical developments as well as the future of gas distribution and detection.
