Support for 32bit FabGuard Executive Discontinued

Jennifer Taylor – Software Test Manager, FabGuard Product Group, Newton MA

Background

The technologies needed to create the FabGuard Executive and FabGuard Web experience, such as web visualization and support for Application Programming Interface (API) calls, now require a 64-bit computing architecture. In the modern computing environment, 64-bit processors running with the corresponding 64-bit Windows operating systems allow applications such as FabGuard to access dramatically more memory which enables faster system performance. To put this in perspective, a 32-bit Windows operating system limits FabGuard to a maximum of only 4 GB of RAM. A 64-bit Windows operating system allows FabGuard to use a much larger maximum of 512 GB of RAM.

What Changed?

Beginning in FabGuard v19.05.00, the 32-bit version of FabGuard Executive is no longer available. Only the 64-bit version of FabGuard Executive will be available for installation. This means that upgrading to v19.05.00 or later will result in the 64-bit version of the FabGuard Executive and web components being installed.

The new 64-bit version of the FabGuard Executive executable will be in a new directory: C:\Inficon\x64\FabGuardExecutive.exe. The installer modifies the program shortcut to point to this new directory.

What Do I Need To Do?

If you are upgrading from a version of FabGuard Executive that is older than 19.05.00-a to a version that is 19.05.00-a or higher, the following components must be in place prior to upgrade in order for the 64-bit version of FabGuard Executive to operate properly:

  1. Verify that the current version of FabGuard Executive is installed on a computer with a 64-bit Windows operating system.
    1. If not, upgrade to a 64-bit Windows operating system.
  2. (Recommended) Verify that the FabGuard Executive computer contains a minimum of 8-16 GB of physical RAM.
  3. If your factory uses an MS SQL database, the 64-bit driver comes pre-installed with the 64-bit Windows Operating System. No action is required.
  4. If your factory uses an Oracle or a PostGreSQL database, verify that a 64-bit database driver is installed on the FabGuard Executive computer.
    1. If not, install the appropriate 64-bit database driver for your installation.
      • Oracle OLE DB
      • Oracle ODBC
      • PostGreSQL ODBC
  5. We recommend running both the FabGuard Executive and the additional IIS installer when upgrading to 19.05.00. If you do not re-run the "Install and configure IIS" installer, you may find that FabGuard Web will fail to launch. The "Install and Configure IIS" installer modifies the Application Pool to turn "Enable 32-bit applications" to False now that we are using a 64-bit FgWebDll.dll (Figure1).
